Building haematology training capacity in East Africa: a milestone for Kenya
The NNHF partnership with the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) began in 2021. Focusing on the ISTH Regional Training Centres (RTC) programme, we support qualifying centres by offering support for diagnostic and physiotherapy equipment.
Having supported RTCs in Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, we are now helping prospective centres in Africa prepare to join the RTC programme. As part of this, we are pleased to announce that the ISTH Education Committee has awarded Reach‑the‑World Fellowships to Dr Catherine Muendo (Kenyatta National Referral Hospital, Nairobi) and Dr Carole Kilach (Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Eldoret). This is an important first step as part of a longer-term plan for Kenya to join the ISTH RTC programme, which would make the country host to the first accredited RTC in East Africa. With NNHF Council Members Dr Amy Shapiro and Prof Johnny Mahlangu as mentors, we wish Dr Muendo and Dr Kilach every success with their fellowships, and this significant step toward expanding regional training, improving specialist care and building sustainable haematology capacity across the continent.
