Mombasa’ ambitious goal: Top haemophilia clinic in Kenya

On 7 February 2024, the General Manager of NNHF, along with team representatives, visited the Haemophilia and Sickle Cell Care Clinic of the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital in Mombasa.

This clinic was established in 2022, as part of the first project supported by the NNHF and a grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

Over the past year, Dr David Obondi Atati, the haematologist in charge of the clinic, and his team have doubled the number of people diagnosed with haemophilia, thanks to awareness campaigns and family tree evaluations. Additionally, their advocacy efforts have resulted in the provision of free consultations, diagnosis, treatment and physiotherapy now available for patients registered in the haemophilia clinic. Despite reaching such impressive milestones, the team continues to work tenaciously, with the ambition of becoming the best haemophilia clinic in Kenya.

Recently, as part of the second project supported by NNHF and NNF, the Mombasa team organised a sensitisation session dedicated to people newly diagnosed with haemophilia and their families. The session allowed the team to carry out family tree evaluations, aimed at identifying potential new cases of haemophilia within the same family.
