The NNHF Council has selected South Africa 4 as Project of the Year 2021 for exemplary leadership, proactive project management and a willingness to adapt to challenges. Congratulations to our partners at the South African Haemophilia Foundation (SAFH) and its Medical and Advisory Council (MASAC) for enabling the team to successfully create a national patient registry while engaging a new generation of young leaders to secure the future of haemophilia care in South Africa.

Project objectives

  • Establish a national web-based registry.
  • Improve capacity  and succession planning of SAHF.
  • Improve haemophilia care through multidisciplinary training.

Achievements

  • 177 people with bleeding disorders from five haemophilia treatment centres entered into the newly established online patient registry.
  • 13 members of SAHF have been trained to establish the youth committee, together with two mentors who will be responsible for developing youth skills through community education, raised awareness and virtual platforms to allow for ongoing exchange.
  • People with haemophilia living in seven provinces across the country can access care closer to where they live due to the increase in knowledgeable healthcare professionals, with the training of 300 doctors and 100 nurses.
