NNHF Project of the Year Award 2025

By uniting two regional initiatives – Southern Thailand and Northeastern Thailand – the project successfully adapted a proven care model to local contexts, demonstrating how shared learnings and coordination can accelerate progress and expand access to quality care.

Bringing care closer to home through decentralisation

A central pillar of the project was the decentralisation of haemophilia care. Training hubs were strengthened in both regions, enabling healthcare professionals to deliver more specialised services closer to patients’ homes.

As a result, travel time to access care was reduce by up to six hours for many patients and families – a meaningful improvement that lowers the burden of care and supports earlier intervention and follow-up.

Empowering patients through self-management

In Southern Thailand, the project placed strong emphasis on patient empowerment and self-management. This approach led to remarkable improvements at Songklanagarind Hospital, where

  • Prophylaxis use increased from 15% to 80%
  • 22 people are now confidently self-infusing, supporting better bleed prevention and quality of life

Strengthening expertise nationwide

Beyond regional impact, the project contributed to national knowledge sharing and capacity building, advancing musculoskeletal (MSK) care and expanding the use of point-of-care ultrasound across Thailand.

A global effort, a local impact

The success of the Thailand project was made possible through close collaboration with expert volunteers from SickKids (Canada) and the Indiana Hemophilia & Thrombosis Center (USA).

Celebrating what’s possible through collaboration

Team Thailand’s achievement is a powerful reminder that when regions work together and place people with haemophilia at the centre, meaningful and lasting progress is possible.
