Coalition for impact in haemophilia care in Portuguese-Speaking Africa
Discover how a new coalition is transforming haemophilia care in Portuguese-speaking Africa. Angola, Mozambique, and Cape Verde are paving the way for better diagnosis, treatment, and advocacy.
Angola, Mozambique and Cape Verde, as part of the Portuguese-speaking African countries (Países Africanos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa – PALOP), have formed a coalition to advance haemophilia care. With support from the Novo Nordisk Haemophilia Foundation (NNHF), healthcare professionals from Cape Verde and Mozambique took part in a training held in Angola. The event was organised as part of the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) twinning programme between Angola and Brazil’s Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP).
Building Capacity and Advocacy
The five-day workshop included haematologists, nurses, dentists, and lab technicians, all benefiting from practical sessions tailored to their needs. The programme also received strong support from Angola’s Ministry of Health, with officials attending the opening ceremony and reinforcing the importance of advocacy for better care.
“With this approach, we can unify our efforts across borders while still ensuring the different needs of each country are met. That’s how we build lasting change for haemophilia care in our region.” – Amos Gitonga Mbaabu, NNHF Associate Programme Manager

Looking Ahead
This coalition has proven that cross-border coalition works. There are plans to expand and welcome more PALOP countries, ensuring no Portuguese-speaking African nation is left behind in the journey toward equitable haemophilia care. By leveraging the activities of the WFH twinning programme, this experience has shown us that NNHF and WFH initiatives can complement each other and strengthen what our partners are doing to improve care.
