Saliou Diop

Prof Saliou Diop is a Professor of Haematology and Blood Transfusion and Head of the Hematology Department at the Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy and Odontology, Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar, Senegal. He is also a Consultant Hematologist in the clinical haematology service at the Centre National de Transfusion sanguine in Dakar, which he has led to recognition as an International Hemophilia Treatment Centre by the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH).

Prof Diop earned his Doctor of Medicine from Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar and specialised in biological and clinical haematology, with further studies in France including a master’s degree in blood cell biology, immunology and molecular biology, and a diploma in blood transfusion.

Throughout his career, Prof Diop has taken a keen interest in hereditary bleeding disorders as well as haemoglobinopathies, especially sickle cell disease. He served on the WFH Board of Directors for about ten years and contributed significantly to the training of healthcare professionals and to advocating for improved care for these conditions in Senegal and Africa, particularly in French-speaking Africa. Prof Diop has served as the Director of the national blood transfusion service in Senegal for 15 years. He has extensive experience with international organisations and has served as President of several scientific societies, including the Francophone African Society of Hematology and the Africa Society For Blood Transfusion. Prof Diop is involved in numerous research projects in general hematology, with a particular focus on inherited bleeding disorders, sickle cell disease, and blood transfusion. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals. Prof. Diop is also invited to speak at many prestigious conferences.

Prof Diop was elected to the NNHF Council in 2026.
