Johnny Mahlangu

Prof Johnny Mahlangu is a Professor of Haematology and the Academic Head of the Department of Molecular Medicine and Haematology in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand as well as the National Health Laboratory Service in South Africa. He is also Head of Clinical Haematology at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

Johnny completed his undergraduate and postgraduate training in science and medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand, acquiring qualifications as a haematologist and clinical haematology sub-specialist through the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa. His primary area of research focuses on novel therapies for bleeding disorders, for which he has acted as Principal Investigator in over 100 international multicentre studies.

He has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, many in high-impact journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), The Lancet, Blood, and JTH. He has presented more than 700 oral talks and poster abstracts at national and international scientific meetings. His academic citizenship includes 50 memberships of national and international scientific committees.

Johnny has received over 30 honours and awards, including two Wits Vice Chancellor Awards (for research and academic citizenship), as well as national (SACHAS, ASSAF) and international (ASH, ISTH) academic leadership awards.

Prof Mahlangu was elected to the NNHF council in 2019.
