NNHF funds and supports programmes in low- and middle-income countries to improve access to care for people with haemophilia and haemoglobinopathies. The typical project duration is one to three years.

Each project is tailored to local needs and focuses on sustainable outcomes. Such outcomes rely on having local partnerships in place. While our partners in the countries take this responsibility, NNHF acts as supporting partner through every step, from fine-tuning the first project idea to execution and successful completion. NNHF encourages each project to be led by a local partner from the medical community, recognising their important role in improving access to care.

NNHF application principles

These principles guide how NNHF reviews project applications and supports partners through the application process. They are intended to increase clarity, consistency and quality in decision-making while keeping a strong focus on local needs an dlong-term impact.

  • Community and patient-centred: Projects should respond to the needs and priorities of people living with haemophilia and/or haemoglobinopathies and their communities.
  • Locally led and context-driven: Applications should be grounded in a clear understanding of the local healthcare system, including barriers and opportunities in the specific country/region.
  • Partnership-based: We prioritise strong collaboration between patient organisations, medical teams and other relevant national stakeholders, with clear roles and shared accountability.
  • Aligned with NNHF’s mission and focus areas: Projects should fit within NNHF’s scope and contribution to improved access to quality care and treatment (e.g. diagnosis/registry, capacity building, awareness/advocacy, and system strengthening).
  • Feasible and well-designed: Objectives, activities, timeline and budget should be realistic, clearly defined and proportionate to the expected results.
  • Sustainable and capacity building: We support approaches that strengthen local capacity and can be maintained over time, reducing reliance on external support where possible.
  • Impact-oriented: Applications should define expected outcomes and how progress will be measured, with learning used to improve implementation.
  • Integrity and good governance: Applicants must demonstrate appropriate governance, financial controls and responsible grant management; NNHF conducts due diligence to identify and manage risk.
  • Transparency and compliance: Applicants are expected to provide complete, accurate information and to comply with relevant ethical standards, data protection requirements and any contractual obligations.
  • Fair and consistent review: Applications are assessed in a structured way and with an effort to apply the same standards across countries and partners, recognising differences in context.

In practice, these principles are reflected in the information requested in the application form and in the indicative assessment criteria used during review. Assessment criteria are non-exhaustive and do not replace judgement based on local context and NNHF’s approach.
