Objectives

  • Strengthen infrastructure and referral system for people with bleeding disorders
  • Establish a regional haemophilia treatment centre in Kutaisi
  • Expand haemophilia care to a satellite hospital in Batumi and Zugdidi
  • Create and empower 4 regional youth groups to improve better self-care of people with haemophilia

Achievements

  • 4 hours reduced travel time for people with haemophilia by decentralising diagnosis and haemophilia care to Kutaisi, Western Georgia. Activities executed include:
    • procurement of equipment for the Blood Coagulation Center and training of 14 lab technicians in Tbilisi
    • 2-week specialised training in Lithuania for one haematologist, one nurse and one physiotherapist
  • Increased diagnosis rate by 4.8% from 82.5% to 87.3%
  • Cascading of knowledge from the trained healthcare professionals abroad through a 2-week training of two doctors, one physiotherapist and two nurses from Zugdidi and Batumi
  • Strong collaboration between the patient organisation in Georgia with the team in Lithuania, facilitating a workshop for 15 regional youth empowering them to become active members of the Georgian haemophilia society, motivating them to be part of the organising committee for 4 workshops together with healthcare professionals from Tbilisi and Kutaisi training 84 people with haemophilia in Kutaisi, Batumi, Zugdidi and Tbilisi on the management of haemophilia
