Objectives
- Increase public and authorities’ level of knowledge about haemophilia
- Empower members of the patient organisation through international exchanges
- Develop haemophilia knowledge of healthcare professionals in Luanda and Huambo
- Upgrade reference laboratory in Luanda and decentralise diagnosis to Huambo
- Improve knowledge of haemophilia amongst people with haemophilia and families
Achievements
- Decentralisation of diagnosis and basic haemophilia care to Huambo, 600 kilometres away from Luanda, saving 10 hours (one way) of travel time for people with haemophilia
- Training of more than 220 healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses, lab technicians and physiotherapists on general haemophilia awareness to recognise the clinical signs of haemophilia, refer potential cases to the reference centre and manage emergencies
- Increased diagnosis rate by 177% through awareness raising trainings amongst healthcare professionals and a massive media campaign on television and radio. In total 180 new people with haemophilia were diagnosed, leading to a diagnosis rate of 6%
- Empowerment of the patient organisation through international exchanges with the Portuguese patient organisation, allowing them to learn from the experience on treatment procurement
- Advocacy activities led to the purchase of treatment by the Ministry of Health and they are currently in discussion with two pharmaceutical firms to purchase larger quantities
- 78 people with haemophilia and their families were trained to better self-manage their condition
